What can we learn from college rankings?
“It took nearly a century for institutions to realize the limitations and inequities of standardized tests as we know them. Will it take even longer for a critical mass of colleges to publicly acknowledge the flaws of commercial rankings?
Jonathan Burdick, vice provost for enrollment at Cornell University, points out the fundamental flaw of rankings, saying, “the methodology is not rigorous enough to guide most of the prospective students’ thinking, and even less to support their final decision about where best to invest their time, money, and (for many) some of their personal identity. So the risks outweigh the benefits.”
